Vision
The vision of the Association of Alayiotes is to harness technology in order to ensure equal access to knowledge, folk art, ethnographic tradition, history, and the cultural heritage of the Alayiotes, both for the wider public and for the academic and research community.
The Digital Museum is a modern, interactive, and fully accessible bilingual online platform that recreates the experience of a physical museum. It offers structured access to collections, objects, and well-documented cultural material originating from Alaya in Asia Minor.

A New Beginning
The opening of the “House of the Alagiotes” (ALAYA) in 2023 sparked a genuine cultural awakening: dozens of members of the Association revealed that they had preserved valuable family heirlooms and historical artifacts that had until now remained unknown. This resurgence of memory created the need for a comprehensive, interactive digital museum, the Digital Museum of the Alagiotes of Asia Minor.
The Digital Museum will draw upon the Association’s cultural holdings and contribute to the digital preservation and promotion of material entrusted by private individuals. It will serve as a dynamic platform, continuously enriched with new exhibits from Alayiotes families of Nea Ionia as well as from Alayiotes across Greece and Cyprus.

For more than a century, the Association of Alayiotes has upheld and safeguarded the continuity of collective Memory, advancing the preservation and interpretation of the unique cultural heritage of Asia Minor, while fostering enduring channels of reconciliation and cultural affiliation.
In 2024, the Hellenic State undertook a significant act of recognition with the establishment of the University Chair for the Hellenism of Asia Minor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, thereby creating the conditions for a structured institutional, scholarly, and international approach to the field. The Association will continue to actively support this initiative.
In this context, the Digital Museum of the Alayiotes substantially reinforces the work of the newly established Chair by providing researchers, scholars, and students with direct access to thoroughly documented objects and cultural material, thereby facilitating study, cross-referencing, and the production of new academic knowledge.
Over its eighty years of operation, the Association has gathered a substantial body of material evidence spanning from the late nineteenth century to the present day: photographs, documents and manuscripts, clothing and jewelry, objects of everyday life, ecclesiastical objects, rare publications, sound archivals, tTools of early everyday life, tools of the textile industry, etc.
At the ALAYA Cultural Space, the Association presents only a small portion of this cultural legacy, which has already been visited by numerous institutions, cultural organizations, and members of the public. The "Home" of the Alagiotes has been, since 1945, a foundational aspiration of the refugee communities of Alaya and Attaleia in Asia Minor, communities violently uprooted from their ancestral lands, who sought stability and renewal as they built new lives in metropolitan Greece. Today, it operates in Nea Ionia as a place of artistic exchange, a venue for showcasing creative work, and a space for learning and engagement with the arts. It embodies a deep commitment to the beauty of multicultural coexistence, an ethos profoundly rooted in the traumatic and ever-present experience of the Asia Minor displacement.
