Yarn Count and Weight Measuring Device

A device for measuring weight and determining yarn count, characteristic of Nea Ionia’s textile activity in the 1950s—by which time the area had already become established as the “Manchester of Greece.” It was used in weaving mills and quality-control workshops to measure precisely the weight of a small quantity of yarn and, via an analogue scale, to calculate its count—that is, its fineness.
The yarn was placed on the arm’s hook, and a system of levers transferred the weight to a large circular dial, where the pointer indicated finely graduated readings both in grams and in the corresponding count according to the Nm (metric number) system. The dual scale allows simultaneous reading of mass and linear density (per 100 metres), ensuring that the yarn produced had uniform thickness—crucial for the proper operation of automatic looms and the quality of the fabrics.
