Pocket Watch I

A gilt pocket watch by the American firm Illinois Watch Company, one of the most important watch manufacturers in the United States (1869–1928), renowned for its high-precision movements and for producing “railroad grade” watches that were widely used in railway service and in commercial travel. The company was distinguished for the quality of its construction, its finely engineered mechanisms, and its durable enamelled dials.
The watch belonged to Efstathios Nouveloglou, owner of coal mines in Alaya, and is kept in a later box from a Turkish jewellery shop, bearing the wish “İyi günlerde kullanın” (“May you use it in good days”).
