Description
Materials and Techniques
Loom-woven textiles in silk and cotton. Embroidery using gold braid, gold thread, and metallic threads. Traditional Asia Minor tailoring: multiple pleats, narrow cuffs, and reinforced shoulders.
This costume is not merely clothing: it expresses the identity of the Greeks of Alaya, preserves memories of dowry and family honour, combines Greek, Asia Minor, and Ottoman elements, and bears the strong imprint of its time—the obligatory fez, but also the distinctive aesthetic sensibility of the women of Alaya.
With the uprooting of 1922, these costumes were brought to Greece as treasured heirlooms, often kept in dowry chests, bearing witness to a world that was lost.
It is exhibited at the Folklore Museum of KE.MI.PO., Municipality of Nea Ionia.
