New Testament

An edition of the New Testament printed in 1893, “in Athens and Constantinople,” at the expense of the British and Foreign Bible Society, within the framework of its extensive publishing activity aimed at disseminating the Scriptures throughout the Ottoman Empire.
The book includes introductory notes and an Arabo-Turkish text in accordance with the official administrative requirements of the time, and it preserves an original metal clasp on its leather binding. The paper shows visible foxing, common in the late 19th century, and the overall construction reflects the careful yet functional character of British Bible Society editions intended for broad use by parish communities and private readers.
This particular New Testament is a representative example of religious book production in the Eastern Mediterranean prior to the uprooting, reflecting the circulation of books between Athens and Constantinople as well as the linguistic and cultural interweaving of the period.

Donated to the collection of the Alaya Association, it is exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.
