Alaya Family II

This photograph depicts the Markoglou family of Alaya—timber merchants—in the early 20th century, shortly before the 1922 exodus. The mother, dressed in a characteristic floral dress of the period and wearing a metal necklace, poses seated while holding an infant; to her right and left stand two older boys in their everyday clothing. The composition is typical of popular studio photography in Asia Minor prior to the Asia Minor Catastrophe: static pose, neutral backdrop, and clear arrangement of figures, intended to record family unity and to serve as a keepsake in uncertain times.
The photograph has historical value, conveying with immediacy the social and economic profile of Greek families in Alaya: simple yet carefully kept clothing, handmade textiles, and practical children’s dress—everyday evidence from a community soon to lose its homeland.
Donated to the collection of the Alaya Association and exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre by the granddaughter Chrysoula Markoglou.
