Description
This piece of needlework was produced by a refugee embroiderer in Nea Ionia around 1950, a period when many women from Asia Minor supported themselves economically by embroidering other families’ dowries, thus continuing the highly valued Asia Minor tradition of meticulous textile work. It was made to order as a replacement for an identical embroidery that had been destroyed in Alaya.
The object is a testament to the cultural continuity of Asia Minor refugee women and to their contribution to shaping the textile and embroidery arts of Nea Ionia.
