Sewing Machine

A hand-cranked sewing machine from the early 20th century, decorated with the period’s characteristic gold motifs. It was brought from Alaya to Greece by Vasiliki Michaelidou and her family, who initially settled in Cyprus and later in Eleftheroupoli, Nea Ionia.
Objects of this kind were treasured family heirlooms: a means of livelihood, a tool for domestic production, and a symbol of the effort to make a new beginning. The machine bears pronounced traces of use, recording the continuity of life before and after displacement.
