Exchangeable Property Assessment

An act of the Directorate of Exchange of the Ministry of Agriculture concerning the refugee Maria Tougiousert, in which the value of her lost Asia Minor property is recognised as 44.95 drachmas.
In 1924, bread in Athens was priced at approximately 4.36 drachmas per oka (an Ottoman/Greek unit of weight equal to 1.282 kg).
With 44.95 drachmas, one could buy roughly 10 okas of bread—i.e., approximately 13 kilograms.
The document is accompanied by a certificate from the National Bank of Greece (1928) for the issuance of the corresponding compensation bonds. It is evidence of the restitution process for exchangeable-property refugees following the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Donated to the collection of the Alaya Association by Sofia Tsompanaki, from the personal archive of her husband Kostas Tsompanakis, President of the Association, it is exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.
