“Bonds”

A bond pre-agreement for compensation issued to an Asia Minor refugee, in the name of Georgios Tsompanakis (Tsobanoglou), with a nominal value of 1,200 drachmas, by the Laiki Apotamieusis company.
The document forms part of the economic restitution system implemented after the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), within the framework of the population exchange and compensation for lost “exchangeable” properties. Instead of immediate cash compensation, many refugees received bond titles or pre-agreement certificates, which were gradually redeemed by the Greek state or the National Bank.
This particular pre-agreement confirms that the beneficiary received a series of bonds from various issues of the National Bank and the state. It bears handwritten signatures, official stamps, and acts of validation, functioning as legal proof of compensation and as a valuable testimony to the complex restitution mechanisms of the interwar period.

Donated to the collection of the Alaya Association by Sofia Tsompanaki, from the personal archive of her husband Kostas Tsompanakis, President of the Association, it is exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.
