Refugee Identity Card

A refugee identity card belonging to Eleni Yazitzoglou, widow of Pantelis, born in 1882 in Alaya. The expulsion found her at about 40 years of age, struggling to survive in Nea Ionia, Attica, and to support her family alone. The card records her new address at 5 Alayas Street, one of the first refugee streets in the newly formed neighbourhood.
The document is a characteristic record of the early years of settlement of Alaya refugees, when census registration, identification, and the provision of medical and social care were essential processes for survival.

Donated to the collection of the Alaya Association by her grandson, Pantelis Yazitzoglou, and exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.
