Menologion (Synaxarion)

A large Byzantine icon of the Menologion / Synaxarion type, organised in horizontal registers depicting saints, monastic martyrs, military saints, and scenes from the liturgical and hagiographical year. Such multi-figure compositions were often used in churches as didactic and devotional aids, offering the faithful a visual presentation of feast days and commemorated saints.
The icon was preserved from the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen within Alaya Castle, one of the most important churches of the Greek Orthodox (Rum) community. It bears characteristic features of 19th-century Asia Minor painting: strong outlines, flat colour fields, successive corrective layers, and a rich red background. The extensive wear in the lower registers attests to long-term liturgical use.

It was later conserved by the icon painter Dimitris Alevizopoulos.
