Archangel Michael

A Byzantine icon of the Archangel Michael, preserved by Efstathios Nouveloglou from the icon stand of the Church of the Archangels within Alaya Castle, in the cemetery. The Archangel is rendered in the characteristic martial iconography of the late post-Byzantine period: breastplate, cloak, raised sword, and scales—symbols of judgement and divine justice.
The icon features an unusual technique with applied metal sheets (protective “silver coverings”) on the sword and the scales, an element that reinforces its devotional use and points to local workshops in Asia Minor of the 18th–19th century. The strong colour contrasts and strict frontal stance are characteristic of the period and region.
