Nea Ionia—the “Manchester of Greece”—teemed with thousands of workers changing shifts in an unending flow: some leaving exhausted, others arriving for work, and the streets filling with movement and voices. Above all, however, the city had a dominant sound: the ceaseless roar of textile machinery, a continuous metallic murmur that drowned out everything else.
