Virgin and Child I

An early Byzantine icon of the Virgin and Child, preserved from the home of the Sakaloglou family in Alaya and brought to Nea Ionia by Gesthimani Sakaloglou. It is a characteristic example of Asia Minor post-Byzantine art from the early 17th century, with a vivid colour palette, a typically frontal presentation, and details indicating a workshop of the period.
The silver revetment was added later as a votive offering, in accordance with a common devotional practice in Asia Minor communities. The icon was later conserved by the icon painter Dimitris Alevizopoulos.
