It is made entirely of cast iron, with a characteristic wooden handle, necessary to protect the hand from heat. The lid opens by means of a metal lever, and glowing charcoal was placed inside; the temperature was regulated by opening or closing the lid, while rows of ventilation holes in the base allowed air circulation so the charcoal could remain alight.
The richly toothed border at the junction of lid and body reflects a local Asia Minor tendency towards ornament even in everyday objects. Its heavy, robust form—designed for durability and continuous use—suggests that it was a valued, long-lasting household tool. In Alaya, where dowry-making and garment care carried great importance, such irons were integral to domestic competence and often passed from mother to daughter as a practical family heirloom.
It is exhibited at the Folklore Museum of KE.MI.PO., Municipality of Nea Ionia.
Kindly made available for photography by KE.MI.PO., Municipality of Nea Ionia.

[212

0":"post-21031","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-everyday-objects","8":"first","9":"instock","10":"shipping-taxable","11":"product-type-simple
["GET
