The surface of the lid bears an engraved Ottoman inscription: \u00ab\u064a\u0627\u062f\u06af\u0627\u0631 1320\u00bb (Y\u00e2dg\u00e2r 1320), meaning \u201cKeepsake, 1320.\u201d The date 1320 corresponds to 1902\u20131903 CE according to the Hijri calendar.<br \/>\nThe use of the word Y\u00e2dg\u00e2r indicates that the object functioned as a commemorative gift for a Greek household in Alaya. To the right of the inscription, a later Greek hand-engraved mark with a cross is visible, likely a sign of ownership or blessing.<br \/>\nThe vessel is a characteristic example of Ottoman metalwork used by Greeks of Asia Minor in the early 20th century, and one of the valued objects preserved during the uprooting.
