Then, as young people of fifteen to twenty years of age, they were violently uprooted from their homes and lands; they endured a war as soldiers and struggled to stand again as refugees in an unfamiliar metropolis. And yet now, in the maturity of their fifties, they return—not to claim what was lost, nor to confront the trauma, but to meet friends once more: their Turkish neighbours.

It is difficult to grasp the inner strength of these people. Those who had every reason to turn memory into anger chose something else: dignity—faithfulness to their own values; the humanity they carried from Alaya to Nea Ionia, unbroken by uprooting, poverty, or loss.

From landowners they became labourers in order to survive. From prosperous householders they became refugees with nothing. And yet they kept what was most precious: their generous hearts.

These people, who could justly have been filled with bitterness, became bearers of reconciliation. Through actions, not words, they reopened the path of friendship between the Greek and Turkish communities—a path which, five decades later, led to the official twinning of Nea Ionia and Alanya in 2001.

From the 1950s onward, members of the Alaya Association organised missions to Alaya with the aim of reconnecting with the homeland and documenting the Greek quarter within the Castle.
