Inside the monument, graffiti depicting boats and ships survive, bearing witness to the region\u2019s long-standing shipbuilding tradition.<br \/>\nThe tarsan\u00e1, built in 1221 by the Seljuk Turks, is an impressive medieval dock basin measuring 57 \u00d7 40 m, with five vaulted bays and pointed, equilateral arches.<br \/>\nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries, the tarsan\u00e1 retained a pivotal role in Alaya\u2019s economy and maritime activity:<br \/>\n\u2022 it functioned as a principal site for repairing small and medium-sized merchant vessels,<br \/>\n\u2022 it supported the city\u2019s active shipping and trade network, linking the Asia Minor coast with Cyprus and the islands of the Aegean,<br \/>\n\u2022 it provided technical expertise through artisans who passed down their knowledge from generation to generation,<br \/>\n\u2022 it served as a hub for shipyards and workshops, stores of materials, rope and timber, and as a gathering place for the region\u2019s merchants and shipowners.<br \/>\nThe preserved shells constitute material evidence of the marine ecosystem that developed around the tarsan\u00e1, as well as a silent testimony to the continuous shipbuilding and commercial activity that characterised Alaya up to the expulsion.<br \/>\n<em><strong>They were donated to the collection of the Alaya Association and are exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":20717,"template":"","meta":[],"product_brand":[],"product_cat":[212],"product_tag":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-20979","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-everyday-objects","8":"first","9":"instock","10":"shipping-taxable","11":"product-type-simple"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/20979","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/product"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/20717"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20979"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"product_brand","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_brand?post=20979"},{"taxonomy":"product_cat","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_cat?post=20979"},{"taxonomy":"product_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_tag?post=20979"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
