{"id":20978,"date":"2025-12-05T13:32:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T11:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/?post_type=product&#038;p=20978"},"modified":"2025-12-08T23:29:42","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:29:42","slug":"1548","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/alaya.gr\/digitalmuseum\/en\/object\/1548\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorabilia of the Church of St George"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"longdescrmuseum\" class=\"woocommerce-product-details__short-description\">\n<p>The feast of the patron saint was a major event for the community: families camped around the church, attended the Divine Liturgy, and a two-day festival followed, with music, dancing, and abundant food.<\/p>\n<p>In the collective memory of the people of Alaya, one incident has been preserved as a miracle: during one such celebration, an infant sleeping inside the church was found in the morning with a large snake coiled beneath the coverings, yet the child had suffered no harm. After the expulsion, the child settled with the family in Nea Ionia, in the neighbourhood of Kalogreza.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>These memorabilia were donated to the collection of the Alaya Association and are exhibited at the ALAYA Cultural Centre.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fragments of roof tiles and stones from the holy-water fountain (*agiasma*) of the Church of St George of the Hill in Alaya (1873). The materials were collected prior to the church\u2019s renovation works and constitute authentic surviving elements of the city\u2019s most important place of worship.<br \/>\nSt George was the patron saint of Alaya. According to local tradition, at the spot where the Saint vanquished the dragon beneath the Red Tower, his horse made three hoofprints as it moved towards the Castle\u2014the Greek quarter. At the third print, where it halted, the church was built. At each hoofprint, holy water was said to have sprung forth, and around these springs the people of Alaya constructed three fountains: two within the Castle and one behind the church.
