The cross is an exceptional example of 19th-century ecclesiastical metalwork: it features finely worked miniatures of sacred figures in its recessed sections, decorative finials reminiscent of church-shaped architectural forms, as well as the Byzantine eagle at the top, a symbol of Orthodoxy and spiritual authority.<\/p>\n<p>The priest Konstantinos Oikonomidis served in the churches of Alaya and died in Nea Ionia, having brought his flock safely to their new homeland.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The cross was later conserved and donated to the collection of the Alaya Association by his grandson, Kostas Oikonomidis.
